Epsom · gold hardware · catalogued 2022
A compact Sellier with defined edges: the starting point for comparing the grain and proportions of the larger Togo examples.

Two handles, a generous body, and a flap secured by straps. A practical idea that became a collecting universe of its own.

The details, in colour
Three documented examples, chosen for the differences in proportion, surface and detail.

Togo · palladium hardware · catalogued 2005
The same 30 format and named leather as the Colvert example, with a lighter blue and different hardware: a useful way to isolate colour and finish.

Family and pictured example
A Birkin is best described as a combination of size, edge construction and leather. Start there before colour or hardware: a 25 Sellier in Epsom and a larger Retourne can share a name while presenting quite different outlines. The blue photograph is a specific Sellier example, not a picture of every Birkin.
Hermès traces the Birkin to a 1984 flight: Jane Birkin described the bag she needed to Jean-Louis Dumas, who sketched a spacious holdall. Its rectangular silhouette and saddle stitching still define the family. [1]
Proportions and variants
Numbers describe nominal width in centimetres, not the bag’s full dimensions. Capacity and shape vary with construction and material.
| Version | What is documented | What to compare | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| 25 | Hermès lists Birkin 25; the pictured auction-house record names a Bleu Céleste Epsom Sellier 25. | Ask for opening width and handle clearance with a ruler; 25 is not the internal width. | [1] [3] |
| 30 | The house page illustrates a Birkin 3 en 1 30. | Confirm classic Birkin or 3 en 1 before comparing compartments and accessories. | [1] |
| 35 / 40 | Both are shown in the house collection. | Compare empty weight and base footprint on the actual bag; neither is measured here. | [1] |
| Sellier / Retourne | Sotheby’s distinguishes exterior-edge stitching from rounded, piped Retourne edges. | Ask for side and corner views; leather stiffness alone cannot establish construction. | [2] |
Measurements are published exterior specifications unless stated otherwise. A size name is not a measured capacity or a guarantee of fit.

| Leather | Sourced distinction | Inspection implication | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Togo | Natural pebble grain and a supple character. | Compare grain and outline under consistent lighting. | [4] |
| Epsom | Embossed calfskin with a fine cross-hatched grain and a more shape-retaining character. | The pictured example is catalogued in Epsom; check edges as well as the face. | [4] [3] |
| Clémence | Soft bull-calf leather with a semi-matte surface. | Separate normal softness from distortion; request unfilled side views. | [4] |
Inspection prompts are editorial suggestions. A construction feature, stamp or accessory alone cannot establish authenticity; this guide does not authenticate individual bags.
Before buying and carrying
Exterior width alone cannot answer that. Make a list with the dimensions of your phone, wallet, glasses case and largest rigid item. Ask the seller to demonstrate those items or equivalent measured objects passing through the opening, with the flap closed. Do not infer capacity from a stuffed display photograph.
No construction is ranked here. The cited specialist distinguishes crisp exterior edges from the rounded Retourne profile; that establishes a visual choice, not superior condition or future value. Compare bags of similar age, material and documented condition before drawing a price conclusion. [2]
Request size, construction, named leather, colour, hardware finish, attributed year, measurements and included accessories. Have the seller explain the basis for the year and any restoration claim. A lock, box or date attribution on its own does not authenticate the bag.
Request the underside of both handles, all four corners, base feet, strap holes, closure plates and interior. Ask whether the leather has been recoloured or the edges repaired, with invoices when available. Test opening and closing the actual bag and check the loaded carrying position rather than assuming it from a model photograph.
What this guide can establish
Sotheby’s catalogues this specific 2022 Epsom Sellier Birkin 25 in Bleu Celeste with gold hardware. Its lead image is the same mrkt-dprjd-t3-01.jpg asset used here. This documents a catalogued example; it is not independent factory or condition verification. [3]
Colour evidence checked 2026-09-20. This establishes a documented reference or sale example, not current stock availability, an independently verified original finish, or an exact screen-to-object colour match.
Hermès supplies family history and selected format labels; Sotheby’s supplies construction terminology and the pictured colour attribution. The original pictured listing was recovered at its current short URL and its image asset matched. Full comparative measurements, empty weights and carrying tests across all Birkin sizes remain unmeasured here.
Retail quotes, dealer asking prices and completed auction results measure different things. For a useful comparison, record the date, currency, taxes or buyer’s premium, exact configuration, condition, restoration and accessories. This page does not provide a current market price or forecast future value.
